The Crown Inn, a historic Stockport pub nestled under the Viaduct, has started a 'promising' new chapter.

After closing temporarily in July, the pub is now re-open as of 15 August with a revitalised exterior and interior, and new operators.

Taking over operation are Alan and Chris Gent, who also run the award-winning Petersgate Tap a short stroll away in Stockport town centre.

After negotiations with The Crown Inn's owners (Red Oak Taverns) the pair are now ready to assume control and keep the pub going for years to come.

There will be a wide choice of cask and keg beers, continuing the pub's strong history of championing quality beers and breweries.

Alan and Chris said they'd had an eye on the pub since 2019, and that it had been 'under their skin' for years.

And so when the opportunity to let the pub came up, with favourable conditions, they jumped at the chance.

"It's become apparent during this time that the Crown holds a special place in a lot of peoples' hearts, so we hope the renovation is considered sympathetic and appropriate", Alan said.

"Initial signs are promising, and we have already sold three casks of our 'house beer', Draught Bass, in the first three days. And who knows, with Boddington's Bitter being revived, we may be able to feature that beer on the bar once again!"

The Crown Inn started life in 1877, after it was converted to a pub from three former terraced houses.

Having existed in three different centuries, it's garnered an impressive reputation - indeed, in 2009, it was the runner up in CAMRA's National Pub of the Year competition.

Local Stockport and South Manchester CAMRA Branch Chairman John Clarke said "It's great to see that one of Stockport's flagship pubs is once again in safe hands, especially at a time when the hospitality industry is facing many challenges, and scores of places are closing for good.

"This area of the town is undergoing a transformation, with many new homes being built, and with the new Interchange now open, the pub is in an ideal area to serve these new residents and visitors.

"This addition to our list of excellent pubs and bars in and around the town centre can only enhance the town's reputation for a great day out. I wish Alan and Chris all the best for a successful future at the Crown".
