A leak on a Stockport road has left cars having to drive through inches of water, with temporary traffic lights in place.

The incident happened next to the junction of Jacksons Lane and Arundel Avenue and is believed to have started in the early hours of this morning.

At 10am the Local Democracy Reporting Service saw water was still flowing onto the surrounding streets, with workers from United Utilities at the scene.

One neighbour on nearby Kenilworth Drive said: "We were all up early this morning, it was quite deep. In one of the houses the whole garden was flooded."

Another added: "I was up at 6am and it was like a river this morning, I thought it was quite dangerous. I've never seen anything like this before around here."

United Utilities said a third party has been doing some work in the area and the burst is located in one of their excavations.

The water firm added it is working to stop the leak and repair the pipe as quickly as it can, trying to balance keeping customers in the area on supply, and that it is knocking on the doors of local residents who may be affected.

A spokesperson said: "Our teams are on site dealing with a leak in Hazel Grove. We will be working as quickly as we can to carry out the repairs and we are supporting those customers that have been impacted."

Traffic cones and barriers were put up around the area where the water was flowing out from.

Cars were still seen able to get past the road despite having to wade through water.

Images of the leak were shared in a local Facebook group this morning around 5.45am showing the street under water.

United Utilities has recorded the 'active' leak on its website, as well as a report about no water supply.

Residents on Kenilworth Drive said their water was still running around 10am.

Norbury and Woodsmoor councillor Dominic Hardwick said: "We've been in communication with council officers and United Utilities about this, we're trying to get it fixed as soon as possible."
