Taylors Fish & Chips has been named among the top 40 takeaways in the UK - and they could be about to take the number one spot.

The restaurant and takeaway, based in Woodley Precinct, has been shortlisted at the 2027 National Fish & Chip awards, which aim to recognise outstanding food and service in the industry.

Taylors is among 40 establishments to be shortlisted in the awards' coveted 'Takeaway of the Year' category - these nominees will go through further rounds of judging before an overall winner is crowned in February 2027.

Among the hopefuls are takeaways from the very top of the country in Aberdeenshire through to the bottom in Devon.

Taylors is not just the only Stockport entry on the list - they're also the only takeaway from Greater Manchester.

Further still, it will be the second year running that the Woodley takeaway has made the top 40.

The team said they were 'absolutely made up' to have gotten this far.

"To be named in the UK top 40 for the second year running means a lot to all of us", Taylors told Nub News.

"The whole team works incredibly hard, but this year feels different - we're stronger than ever and I genuinely believe we have what it takes to go all the way.

"This year also marks 60 years of Taylors, after the business began back in 1966.

"What a way it would be to celebrate that anniversary by bringing the award home to Woodley.

"When the awards asked why we thought Taylors should win, we used actual comments from our customers in the entry.

"Reading what they had written about our food, our team and what the shop means to the community made us really proud and quite emotional.

"We're incredibly proud to represent Woodley and Stockport again."

Over the next few months, Taylors and the other nominees will face a 'comprehensive evaluation' from a panel of industry experts, covering product quality, hygiene, sustainability, customer service, and industry knowledge.

Last year's winner The Scrap Box, from York, said taking home the award gives the business a 'huge' boost.

"More than six months on from winning, we're still seeing the impact of the award", said Aman Dhesi, co-owner of the Scrap Box.

"The biggest thing has been the opportunities it's opened up for us outside the shop, from media and travel to meeting people across the industry and getting involved in some really exciting projects."

Now in its 39th year, the National Fish & Chip awards aim to "lead the way in elevating industry standards and encouraging innovation".

Businesses nominate themselves for free, and are then put through the rigorous selection process, until the overall winner is crowned.
