Town of Culture year to end ‘with a bang’ with ‘huge weekend celebration’ in March
Stockport's tenure as Greater Manchester Town of Culture ends this year. But, rest assured, it will go out with a bang - a bang shaped like a weekend celebration featuring 50 different events.
The Town of Culture Weekender festival takes place from 23-24 March, and is described as "a fun-packed weekend of free cultural festivities and free access to must-visit venues".
Music, family activities, and shows will take place at 25 different locations across the town centre, including the rooftop park at the interchange, which will have opened by that date.

Stockport station needs ‘immediate attention’ as council plots £65m refurbishment
Stockport train station could get a £65m refurbishment under new plans to modernise the building.
Four phases of work have been put forward to provide a new footbridge, new station entrances, refurbished platforms, and access improvements.
Councillor Grace Baynham has also called for a bridge to link platforms and replace the underpass, and an improved station building with better retail and hospitality options.
The scheme aims to increase rail capacity to meet demand from its catchment area, which is thought to be around two million people who live within 30 minutes travel time of the station.

Stockport’s £1bn Metrolink expansion could see tram extend to Hazel Grove and Marple
Plans to bring the Metrolink to Stockport could see tram services going to other areas in the borough as part of a phased expansion.
An update to Next Stop Stockport – the campaign to bring the tram to the town – shared that linking Stockport to East Didsbury is just "phase one" of the aim.
The line could be extended in future to other areas including Hazel Grove and Marple.
Part of the work has seen Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) review potential routes between Stockport and East Didsbury which could be protected for future tram tracks.

Move over, Bayeux Tapestry - 'Stockport Chronicle' project produces story of the town in textile
Almost a millennium after Bishop Odo of Bayeux commissioned the Bayeux Tapestry to celebrate the achievements of his brother William the Conqueror, Stockport has produced a textile-based history of its own.
The 'Sew Stockport Chronicles' project is a collaborative piece of artwork which aims to celebrate the history of the town in textile. The finished piece was unveiled in a special ceremony at the Arc Centre / Hat Museum on Saturday (24 February).
Local group Self Care Creatives (SCC) presided over the project, which began in October. The group enlisted the help of countless Stopfordians, young and old, who helped plan and produce the piece.
Stephanie and Kimberley, co-founders of SCC, emphasise that this is a piece designed and produced by the people of Stockport, aimed at "reflecting the community values, spirit and textile history of the area".
