New Hatters-themed artwork in Edgeley reaches completion

It's all happening in Edgeley. Recent passers by may well have noticed the new Hatters-themed mural as it inched its way up the wall of a building near the Armoury roundabout.

Today (Tuesday 5 March), after weeks of meticulous work, the mural was officially completed and unveiled in a ceremony, with a number of special guests.

The mural is located at the junction of Castle Street and Mercian Way. Spray paint artist Oskar and poet Ruth Awolola spearheaded the design, writing and painting of the artwork, enlisting help from 12 talented local secondary school pupils in the process.

Andy Burnham says capacity issues at Stockport railway station 'need to be fixed' post HS2 cancellation

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has said that train capacity around Stockport railway station 'needs to be fixed'. 

It comes as Mr Burnham joined northern leaders in Crewe to give a speech on Monday 4 March.

During the talk, the mayor addressed plans for HS2 alternatives for the North West, along with Cllr Sam Corcoran - leader of Cheshire East Council - and metro mayor of the Liverpool City Region, Steve Rotherham.

Plans have already been aired for potential HS2 alternatives; these include a new 'segregated' line from Birmingham to Manchester on the one hand, or upgrades to the existing West Coast Mainline (WCML) on the other.

How will Stockport Council's budget be spent in 2024/25?

Stockport Council passed its budget for 2024/25 in a town hall meeting last month. 

Whilst the council has had to bridge a £10m funding gap and raise council tax, Stockport does not face risk of bankruptcy, and councillors maintain that this year's budget proposals remain ambitious. 

The net revenue budget for council services is £336m.
