Stockport's first electric vehicle charging hub has opened in Romiley.

In all, 19 similar installations are planned across the borough, as part of a £15m deal between Stockport Council and Be.EV (a public electric vehicle charging infrastructure provider).

The charging points will be open to all, although Be.EV members can receive a discount on charging rates.

There are four charging points at the hub, with varying prices and charging speeds; one fast, one rapid, and two ultra-rapid.

  • The rates for ultra rapid / rapid are: £0.82/kWh pay as you go (or £0.77/kWh as a Be.EV member).
  • The rates for fast are: £0.72/kWh pay as you go (or £0.67 as a Be.EV member).

Stockport Council will also receive a share of revenue from the charging points.

A spokesperson for Be.EV said: "As well as cleaner air, residents will also benefit from a share of the revenue from the charge points.

"The [other] chargers will take just two weeks to install and are expected to be operational by the end of the year."

Stockport Council said: "The state-of-the-art charging hub will provide a boost to the local economy and provide EV drivers with reliable and convenient charging whilst they shop on the nearby high street."

Cllr Mark Roberts, Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Environment, added: "The whole of Stockport, including the council, residents and businesses, must make big changes to reduce our emissions now so that we stop contributing to climate change and providing this new infrastructure will help us on that challenging journey.

"Installing more electric vehicle chargers is a key element for the council with regards to its commitment to taking action on climate change as we aim for Stockport to be carbon neutral by 2038."

Be.EV CEO Asif Ghafoor said: "Stockport Council has taken a well thought out intelligent approach to providing EV chargers. It is a great example of how the public sector can partner with the private. [...]

"We want other councils to sit up and take notice of this gold standard development or they will be left behind."
