Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery is celebrating its 100th birthday this Autumn.

The building was opened in 1925 to commemorate those who had died in the First World War.

It now serves as a 'sanctuary of beauty and reflection' - a place to commemorate the area's fallen heroes, and an art gallery to showcase the best of the borough's artistic talent.

To celebrate the centenary, the gallery is hosting a special exhibition featuring artworks which have been submitted by talented local artists.

Named 'Beautiful Things', it aims to celebrate the rich history of Stockport.

It features works from painters, sculptors and designers across the borough who were asked earlier this year to submit works for this new open exhibition.

It will be open to the public from Thursday 16 October.

Councillor Dan Oliver, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Public Protection at Stockport Council, said: "We’re thrilled to celebrate the centenary of the Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery with the Beautiful Things exhibition. This is a wonderful opportunity for the young people of Stockport to showcase their creativity and share what they find beautiful in our community.

“Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery is a special place. Since its opening in 1925, it has been the home to many historic moments and important memories for people across the borough – and serves as a lasting reminder of those who lost their lives during World War I and in subsequent conflicts.

“This exhibition – alongside the Carnival of Art and the opening of Stockroom – is a fitting tribute to Stockport’s rich cultural heritage and exciting creative future.”
