Stockport town centre packed as thousands turn out for Krazy Races
A beautiful summer day and some homemade carts speeding through Stockport town centre - a recipe for an idyllic day.
And an idyllic day it was.
Krazy Races, the soapbox racing event, took place in Stockport town centre yesterday (Sunday 28 July), attracting thousands of visitors young and old.
The event saw 28 teams of racers speed from St Peter's Square to Mersey Square in their homemade soapboxes, powered by nothing more than gravity, luck and courage.
The teams completed two runs each. The top 10 finishers then entered a third and final run to decide the winner.
SK Bombardiers picked up first place, with their beautifully designed cart, modelled on a Second World War fighter plane. They averaged a remarkable 20.4 seconds on each of their three laps.
Dentona and The Phoenix Flyerz picked up second and third places respectively. The Flyerz also won the award for best-designed cart.
However, there was more to the event than just the glory of a podium finish!
The participating teams helped to raise money for charity. The headline causes this year were St Ann's Hospice and The Christie.
As Krazy Races themselves said: "None of this would be possible without the incredible generosity of our fantastic sponsors and teams."
From 11am until 5pm, the town centre was bustling, with food, drink and gift stalls running alongside the races.
And with a big screen in St Peter's Square, the races had all the exciting atmosphere of a big sporting event.
Krazy Races first came to Stockport last year. With all the excitement of Sunday 28th, let's hope there's another visit in the pipeline!
