Stockport station has had an unusual rebrand to 'Scottport' in honour of BBC Radio 2 presenter Scott Mills.

In a secret operation overnight, Avanti staff at Stockport railway station changed all signs at the station to read 'Scottport' to celebrate Mills taking over the flagship Radio 2 Breakfast Show.

Morning commuters - and even Scott himself - were completely surprised by the change.

When he was presented with the news live on air, the presenter simply said: "No I'm sorry, that's not true."

He added: "It's all very well people saying we've renamed a station, and then you look on social media and they've actually changed all the signs. This is bonkers, it's like a fever dream."

Cllr Suzanne Wyatt, Mayor of Stockport, spoke to Scott himself about the change live on BBC Radio 2.

"I'm very happy", she said. "I think it makes people smile. The more we can do to make people smile, the better."

Avanti West Coast hosted a morning of celebrations at the station, featuring Reverend Kate Bottley and the Sing Out choir, who performed in the station's ticket hall bringing cheer to Monday morning commuters.

Scott Mills also used to live near Stockport, adding another layer of unusualness!
