Stockport residents are set to be hit with a council tax hike, new bin charges and new car parking fees.

The moves are planned by the council to cut costs and boost income as the borough scrimps to save millions as part of its annual budget in the face of huge financial uncertainty.

The town hall has to find £60m in savings by 2028/29, having missed out on vital support from the government's £600m Recovery Fund this year.

To balance the books, council bosses say they have to take "difficult" but necessary steps.

A five per cent council tax increase is planned, which would add £100 to yearly bills for Band D households in Stockport.

That is alongside proposals for a £59 annual permit charge for kerbside garden waste collection, and new fees at around half of the borough's free car parks which were part of last year's council budget.

The garden waste proposal would save the council up to £2m but has sparked massive backlash, with more than 8,000 residents sharing their thoughts in a public consultation.

Stockport council's deputy leader Mark Roberts says the garden waste charge has to be considered in order to protect other local services.

"It is an incredibly controversial proposal, it is one which has generated quite a lot of frustration within our community," he added at a cabinet meeting on February 4.

He went on to say that the feedback "hasn't taken away the need for us to make savings and balance the books."

Without the garden waste charge, Cllr Roberts said the council would face having to close "every single library across Stockport" to make the same level of savings.

Cllr Jilly Julian, Stockport's finance chief, said the town hall's budget plans will make sure the council "doesn't wind up like so many other authorities where we're having to ask for emergency financial support."

She added: "The bones of it is, pressures exceed funding, it's that simple. For the 16th consecutive year there's insufficient funding with which we need to protect our most vulnerable residents, deliver vital social care services, and provide the universal services that all of our residents rely on."

Stockport council's budget proposals are set to go to a vote at a town hall meeting on February 27.
