Police officers in Stockport have donated bikes to a local charity that helps young people with cancer.

Officers from the Cheadle Heath Police station gave 20 bikes, plus parts, to Cyclists Fighting Cancer, a charity which helps young people battling cancer to regain their physical fitness.

All the bikes and parts had been seized or found in Stockport. Once used for crime, they are now being used to support this fantastic charity.

The charity works by taking donated bikes and parts, such as this latest batch from the police.

It then refurbishes and resells them from its numerous shops (the nearest is in Chorlton), and the proceeds are used to buy new equipment for children.

PS Nick White of Greater Manchester Police came up with the idea to help after visiting the charity's shop and following their social media.

"Seeing their social media posts about the great work they do for children and young people, I decided to do something about it", PS White said.

One particular hoard of around 45 items (incluidng frames, wheels, and stands) was found during a house search, believed to be linked to a burglary in Derbyshire. All of it was donated to the charity.

Chief Inspector John Picton said: "It's great to make good use of the bikes and associated equipment that have come into our possession during our policing duties.

"To have the opportunity to support a charity and hopefully make a positive impact with children and young people who have been diagnosed with or who are recovering from cancer is fantastic."

PS White added: "Cyclists Fighting Cancer is such worthwhile charity, and we are delighted to have been able to help them."

Adam Thomson, manager of the charity's Chorlton shop, said: "Using a bike can help young people who might be weak and suffering the effects of cancer treatment to get stronger and also provide a much-needed distraction."
