Stockport NHS producing vintage photo album to help patients with dementia
Staff at Stepping Hill Hospital are producing a photo album of bygone Stockport to help patients living with dementia.
This 'therapy book' will contain pictures of buildings, housing, transport, and attractions taken between the years 1940-1990, from Stockport, Greater Manchester and beyond.
The reasoning is that familiar images can have a calming effect on patients living with dementia.
Stockport NHS is also inviting submissions from local residents for pictures to be included in the album.
The sender should be the original photographer, unless specific permission has already been given for the use of another photo.
Judges will pick a winning photo which will feature on the front cover, and the sender will get a £30 Amazon Voucher, kindly donated by supporters.
Ruth Terry, matron for dementia care said; "Being in hospital can be both a frightening and frustrating experience for someone living with dementia. Research has consistently shown that images familiar to these people from their past will often have a calming and therapeutic effect for them.
"By creating this book we hope to create a valuable new resource to help both for them and their carers. We're really looking forward to seeing the photos sent by our helpful local photographers."
