Stockport MP Navendu Mishra has said he 'strongly opposes' the closure of the Heaton Moor NatWest branch.

The banking company announced last month that their Heaton Moor and Hazel Grove branches will be closing in June 2025.

Explaining the closures, NatWest said there had been a decline in the number of customers using counter services at the bank.

At Heaton Moor, for example, there had been a 47 percent decrease in the last five years.

A spokesperson said there was "an increased demand for mobile and online services".

However, Mr Mishra said: "Access to cash is vital, and I believe that everyone should be able to carry out their banking in a way that suits them best. That is why I strongly oppose NatWest's latest wave of branch closures.

He added: "The curtailment of local financial services will have an adverse and disproportional impact on low-income people, the retired community, disabled people, and people with a lower level of online literacy."

"Although the Heatons branch is within close proximity to Post Office branches which offer cash access services, I still believe that this closure is not good enough."

The Heaton Moor and Hazel Grove branches are among 53 others which will be closing this year.

  • Heaton Moor's branch at 44 Heaton Moor Road will close on 3 June 2025.
  • Hazel Grove's branch at 180 London Road will close on 19 June 2025.

After the closures, the next closest branch for would be in Stockport town centre, at 10 Great Underbank.

NatWest's spokesperson continued: "Closing a branch is a decision we take very seriously.

"We know it can affect those less confident with alternatives we offer. We'll always work hard to guide and support you through the changes and find the best way to serve you from now on.
