Stockport's War Memorial art gallery will host a Town of Culture themed public exhibition from 30 July to 21 September.

The gallery, according to Stockport Council, "is designed to give people an opportunity to submit a work of art for display that celebrates something, somewhere or someone in the borough of Stockport".

Artists of all kinds - from established to budding, from visual sculptors to painters and textile artists to digital designers - are invited to submit a piece of work which is linked to the people and places of Stockport.

To give as many people as possible the chance to display their work, submissions are limited to one per person.

As well as being the muse of L.S Lowry, Stockport has played host to a huge number of local artists such as Chris Cyprus and Kate O'Brien.

As the town's rich architectural heritage demonstrates, Stockport has seen hundreds of years of stylistic and artistic developments, from the medieval to the modern.

Any local artists looking to submit, then, can draw on a rich local pedigree of creativity.

Art for this exhibition needs to be in a form that can be displayed, and artists will also have to explain their reasoning behind the work - inspirations, creation process, and more.

Alongside the main open exhibition, there will also be an open exhibition displaying work from children and young people in key stages one to four.

Stockport Council elaborates: "These can be any works but we're especially interested to see how our young creatives have interpreted people, places and stories of Stockport."

Visitors to the gallery will vote on their favourite works, with a winner being announced on 2 September by the Mayor of Stockport, Cllr Graham Greenalgh.

Cllr Frankie Singleton, cabinet member for communities, culture and leisure, said: "The Stockport Open Art Exhibition is always really popular but this year is even more special during our Town of Culture year. This is a great opportunity for budding and established artists to showcase their work in the iconic War Memorial Art Gallery, for everyone to admire.

"We have so much great talent here in Stockport and we look forward to receiving your work."
