Stockport Grammar School students support no-phones policy
By Alasdair Perry 21st Jan 2026
The majority of students at Stockport Grammar School are in favour of not having phones during school-time.
The school introduced a no-phones policy from the start of the September 2025 term, in what Headteacher Sarah Capewell described as a move to reengage pupils with their lessons, and to encourage more face-to-face time during breaks.
Since then, pupils have reported spending more time with their friends at break and lunch, and say they find it easier to stay engaged during lessons.
When asked whether they would want to bring phones back, the majority said they are happy to keep the no-phones system in place.
Stockport Grammar has been using the Yondr pouch system to manage phone usage since September.
The pouches allow students to lock away their phone until the end of the day. Only students who need their device for medical requirements can keep it with them.
Parents were similarly supportive of the change; on a scale of one to five, the average response was 4.2 with five as strongly agreeing to the no=phone policy.
Although some parents have stated that their child's phone usage has remained the same at home, they are happy that throughout the school day the pupils are focused on learning.
One pupil said: "I feel not having phones makes us more social. Me and my friends go outside and play table tennis or football instead of sitting on phones."
Another commented: "I think not having phones has been good. We've been talking about things other than phones because they're locked away."
