'No signs' of meningitis spread in Stockport
By Alasdair Perry 18th Mar 2026
Stockport NHS has said there are 'no recorded signs' of meningitis in Stockport.
It follows an 'unprecedented' outbreak of the disease in Kent.
Health secretary Wes Streeting has said that while the spread of the disease in Kent was 'worrying', he emphasised that the general risk of contagion to the population was 'low'.
Still, the disease is very serious if not treated early.
Meningitis is spread through close contact such as kissing or sharing saliva things like drinks and vapes.
A spokesperson for Stockport NHS said: "Although we have not had any recorded signs of meningitis in our area, it is important to be aware of the signs of this dangerous infection."
Symptoms of meningitis develop suddenly and can include:
- a high temperature (fever)
- being sick
- a headache
- a rash that does not fade when a glass is rolled over it (but a rash will not always develop)
- a stiff neck
- a dislike of bright lights
- drowsiness or unresponsiveness
- seizures (fits)
