A Stockport fish and chip shop remains in the running for one of the UK's most hotly-contested culinary awards.

Taylors, based in Woodley precinct, is in the Top 20 for the National Fish & Chip awards, in the 'takeaway of the year' category.

Taylors is doing Stockport proud as the only Greater Manchester restaurant in this category.

Indeed, along with Westend Fish and Chips in Oswaldtwistle, it's the only entry for the North West as a whole.

The winners will be announced in February 2025.

Taylors is open from 12pm-2pm and 4pm-7.30pm from Tuesday to Saturday.

This Top 20 shortlist comes after a gruelling process of elimination. Now, a panel of fish and chip experts is going over the remaining shortlisted restaurants with a 'fine-tooth comb'. Getting this far is an achievement in and of itself!

As a spokesperson for the awards said: "The business owners have shown excellence in the areas of industry and product expertise, environmental and sustainable business methods, employer accountability, and of course providing the tastiest high-quality food, to name a few of the judging criteria."

Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), which organises the awards, explained the process: "The National Fish & Chip Awards inspects entrants' businesses to such an intricate level as there is a duty of care to ensure industry standards and practices are upheld to the highest degree.

"The ultimate goal is to produce fish and chips that customers want to eat time and time again but doing so sustainably for the environment and business longevity. Our 20 shortlisted chippies are showing their mettle, and we hope they are feeling proud to have made it this far and we are thrilled to be part of their growth experience.''
