Stockport Council named "Local Authority of the Year" at national awards

Stockport Council has been named 'Local Authority of the Year' at a national awards ceremony.
The accolade was awarded at the 2025 MJ Awards, which aim to recognise excellence in local government.
The judges who made the decision praised Stockport Council for its large infrastructure projects, and the town's 'collective energy'.
"Their promise that "the best is yet to come" feels entirely credible", the judges said.
The MJ awards is described as the UK's 'most prestigious' local government awards.
Cllr Mark Roberts, Leader of the Council, said: "This is a fantastic recognition of the dedication and hard work of our staff, partners, and everyone working to support Stockport.
"It is welcome national endorsement of the value for money Stockport council represents to local residents and the many hundreds of services delivered by the council. I also want to thank former Council Leader Cllr Mark Hunter for his ambition and commitment in helping shape the journey that brought us here.
"But we know an award doesn't mean the job is done — we understand that many residents still face real challenges. We remain focused on listening, improving, and delivering for everyone across the borough in very challenging times for Local Government."
Michael Cullen, Chief Executive, added: "We're proud of this recognition, and it's right to take a moment to reflect on what's been achieved through genuine teamwork. But we do so with humility, knowing there is still much more to do. Our focus remains firmly on supporting our communities, tackling inequalities, and building a stronger future together."
