A Stockport church has been shortlisted for a new historical award, launched by renowned historian David Olusoga.

St Peter's Church, which has been ensconced in St Peter's Square since 1888, is in the running for the 'Everyday History Heroes' competition.

The contest aims to celebrate some of the more overlooked historical landmarks across England.

More specifically, it will celebrate sites which showcase the stories of ordinary people - nurses miners, teachers, soldiers and 'changemakers'.

"The award centres on the grassroots histories that often go untold", a spokesperson said. "...the communities who powered industries, stood up for their beliefs, and built modern Britain."

St Peter's Church has been selected for its war memorial, which has allowed local historians to uncover the stories of brave local residents and their deeply personal stories of wartime loss and resilience.

​​​Angela Kenrick​​, churchwarden at St Peter's Church, said: ​​"To be shortlisted for Everyday History Heroes is an honour to those once forgotten names on our War Memorial whose stories have been uncovered through dedicated family history research.

"By sharing their struggles, courage and resilience we hope to inspire others and maybe even trace family members who have no idea these brave men are remembered in St Peter's."

St Peter's Church is one of only three sites in the North West to make the shortlist, and one of 24 across the country.

The winner will be decided by public vote - voting is now open, click here to cast your ballot.

Voting is open until 31 August, with the winner due to be announced on 10 September.

David Olusoga OBE, who launched the awards, said: "History isn't just about the famous names we learn in school - it's about millions of ordinary people whose actions shaped the world we live in today.

"We want to celebrate the amazingly diverse heritage and cultural sites that help us connect with people of the past, and understand how families and communities like our own lived, worked, and made their mark.

"I encourage everyone to explore the shortlist, discover a hidden gem near you, and cast your vote."

Helen Kaye, from Findmypast (who are helping to organise the awards) said: "The shortlisters showcase the uniqueness and diversity of the places and people working tirelessly to tell the story of their communities – with everything from a restored rhubarb farm to an asylum cemetery.

"With help from our extensive digital archives, more of the nation's everyday histories come to light every day. We're delighted to partner with Heritage Open Days to celebrate these 'Everyday History Heroes', and help more people discover the hidden histories on their doorstep."

Other local nominees include the Pankhurst Museum in Manchester and the Cottage Museum in Lancaster.

And, if you fancy exploring any of the shortlisted spots yourself, they will all open their doors to the public for free from 11-20 September, offering a unique opportunity to explore the places behind the stories.
