UP CLOSE: Turmeric Twist - the restaurant bringing a little piece of India to Bramhall

By Alasdair Perry 10th Mar 2025

Nestled in a corner of Bramhall is a new restaurant offering a little piece of India.

It's as close as you're likely to get to authentic Indian cuisine, short of visiting the subcontinent yourself.

Turmeric Twist opened on 27 November 2024, and is based at 55 Dairyground Road.

In the short time since opening, the eatery has already earned a loyal customer base, with five stars on TripAdvisor, and a near-flawless 4.9 stars on Google Reviews.

And there are as many new customers coming to the restaurant through good old-fashioned word of mouth.

Central to all this, of course, is the delicious food.

"We're focussed on proper, authentic Indian food", chef Frenon explains. "As authentic as possible."

Indeed, the cooking team has decades of experience between them in preparing mouth-watering meals in a traditional Indian style.

Frenon himself was born in Goa, and learned to cook by watching his mum prepare meals when he was younger.

"We're focussed on proper, authentic Indian food"

"I started cooking at home from a young age", he explains. "It was an interest which started from watching my mother cook."

Frenon became a professional chef in 2005, and has worked in a wide range of kitchens - including in the Merchant Navy.

His personal favourite dish is chicken xacuti.

"I've been eating it ever since my childhood", he said. "It's absolutely delicious."

Chicken xacuti is also a popular dish among the customers, but that's not to say there aren't plenty of other options on the menu.

In fact, such is the range of choice that there may well be some tantalising dishes which visitors won't recognise.

For example, there are options from the team's native Goa, such as Goan fish curry, prawns Balchau, and the aforesaid xacuti.

There are also some Indo-Chinese dishes, as well as some old favourites such as Bhuna and butter chicken.

Railway Lamb is another customer favourite. This beloved dish originated in the British Raj, when Indian cooks crafted a unique lamb curry to delight British railway officials and travellers.

By blending traditional Indian flavours with British tastes, they created a heart and aromatic curry that became an iconic staple of railway cuisine.

You can browse the menu in full here.

As Frenon explains: "We want to introduce new curries and new traditions.

"Some of these are very popular in India but they're hard to find in the UK. So it's a chance to eat something more authentic."

The tastiness of the food has certainly been attested by customers.

One Google reviewer said it was "the best Indian restaurant food I've ever had". Countless other reviews praise the 'delicious', 'fresh' and 'flavourful' food.

And whatever you do choose to eat, you can be sure of exceptional service from the friendly team.

As other reviewers said, staff are 'friendly and attentive', and offer 'great service from start to finish'.

It also seems that the feeling is mutual!

As Frenon said: "Customers are so friendly and pleasant. Bramhall is a very welcoming community and we're very happy to be part of it."

The restaurant also hosts regular special offers, such as their Sunday special menu. Every month, on the second and last Sundays, Turmeric Twist offers a unique menu featuring dishes that aren't part of our regular offerings.

This allows customers to try something new and exciting.

In March, these special menus will be available on the 23rd, and also on Mother's Day (30th).
