A female dog has been found in Reddish in a 'severely emaciated' condition.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was found on Sunday 14 January in plummeting conditions by a member of the public, who took the dog to the RSPCA.

The dog was having seizures caused by suspected hypothermia. She also sustained severe muscle wastage, and was so thin that she was given a body score condition of only two out of nine by the vet who examined her.

She was microchipped to an address elsewhere in Greater Manchester - the person at this address told the RSPCA that the dog had been sold to someone else around six months ago. They were unable to provide further information.

RSPCA animal rescue officer Steve Wickham, who is investigating the incident, said: "It's clear from this dog's very upsetting condition that she's not received anywhere near the appropriate level of care for weeks, likely months.

"Aside from being starving, she was weak and had very little body fat to protect her from the elements, so it's not surprising hypothermia had started to set in, in this cold weather.

"She was stabilised at the vets and our thanks go to the team who looked after her initially. Food has been slowly reintroduced since and she's starting to make progress."

The Staffy is described as "very friendly and sweet-natured" by the RSPCA. The charity is appealing for any information to help find out who she belongs to.

Anyone with first-hand information which can assist the RSPCA investigation is urged to contact the charity's appeals line, in confidence, on 0300 123 8018 quoting reference reference number 1209012.
