Rogue trader 'exploited vulnerable homeowners' by overcharging for 'substandard' home improvements

A rogue trader who operated in Stockport has been jailed after overcharging for 'substandard' home improvements.
49-year-old Christopher David Casserley - director of Casserley Home Improvements Ltd - used 'aggressive and misleading' practices to overcharge residents by thousands of pounds.
Casserley (of Gorse Drive, Stretford) was sentenced to 18 months in jail after appearing at Minshull Street Crown Court on 24 April 2025, having being found guilty of multiple consumer offences.
A prosecution case was brought by Stockport Council's trading standards team following complaints from customers in Heaton Mersey.
In one case, Casserley was found to have charged £32,000 for work which was valued at £8,500 by an independent chartered surveyor. A second resident paid £3,000 for work valued at around £1,850.
The work was deemed to be either unnecessary, or completed to a poor standard using cheap materials.

The judge described Casserley's actions as a 'serious breach of trust', saying that he had exploited vulnerable homeowners for financial gain.
One of the victims said they felt 'cheated' and 'deceived' in their own home, and they were also upset about the financial loss. They also said it had affected their confidence in builders.
Cllr Dan Oliver, Cabinet Member Communities, Culture and Public Protection, said: "This case demonstrates the vital work of our Trading Standards Officers in protecting residents from unscrupulous and dishonest traders.
"We will not hesitate to take enforcement action against those who exploit vulnerable people in our communities.
"I would urge anyone considering home improvements to be cautious and if something feels wrong, report it. The message is very clear – we will not tolerate this in Stockport and will take robust action wherever possible."
