‘Ready, set, read!’ - Summer reading challenge launches for children across Stockport
As Stockport's Town of Culture year progresses in earnest, children across the borough are invited to celebrate culture in their own way with the 'Ready, set, read' Summer reading challenge.
The idea is to read six books over the summer. If successful, participants can claim a special medal and certificate (and, naturally, can enjoy the mind-broadening benefits of reading!).
Those looking to take part can find a free starter pack at their local library. The theme for the challenge is sport and activity, tying in with the 'Stockport Moves' Town of Culture programme.
They can also sign up online HERE to collect badges, play games, and collect reading rewards, and can also join six brand-new characters as they tackle an obstacle course to collect six golden books.
Any six books can be chosen for 'Ready, set, read', although those in need of inspiration should be sure to browse their local library, which will have displays of age-friendly books ready for the challenge.
Cllr Frankie Singleton, cabinet member for communities, culture and sport at Stockport Council, said: "We all know how important developing literacy skills is for our young people. The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to get children interested in reading some fantastic books, and getting active too.
"It's completely free to get involved, so pop into your local library from 8th July to sign up and get your little ones reading!"
