A Freedom of Information (FOI) request from Stockport Council has revealed that £3.531 million has been made from bus lane and gate fines in Stockport between 2019 and 2024 so far.

The council has confirmed there are only three bus lane/gate cameras in Stockport which have resulted in this figure.

Two are located on Heaton Lane (one facing Eastbound and one facing Westbound) and one is located on Buxton Road.

The dual facing cameras capture drivers on both sides of the road entering and exiting bus lanes and gates.

And drivers who are caught in the act can face a fine of up to £60, or £30 if paid within 21 days.

Councillor Grace Baynham, Cabinet Member for Parks, Highways and Transport Services said: "As part of our award-winning Stockport Interchange, this bus gate plays a crucial role in keeping bus routes free of congestion.

"All bus gate revenue is reinvested into Stockport's transport infrastructure."

Joanna Marchong, investigations campaign manager of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: "Taxpayers will be outraged by the council's cash-grab from motorists.

"The huge fines imposed underscore a deeper issue with the town's road network, which has been left unaddressed for years.

"Council bosses need to act swiftly and use the money generated to fix the transport infrastructure."

Reddish resident, Elaine Armstead, 62, was fined £60 after accidentally driving into a bus lane near the Joseph James Furniture Outlet in the town centre.

She described the total fines handed out by the council as "shocking".

She said: "I don't think the sign was big enough, because I've looked for it again, and I thought I saw a small, oblong sign after.

"I wasn't even aware it was a bus station."
