Poundland has said that it is 'very excited about the possibility of growing Stockport', in light of plans for new town centre stores.

In addition to its existing town centre branch, Poundland plans to take over the lease from the old Wilko store, and open another store on the old BHS site.

In a statement to Nub News on what would potentially be three town centre stores, Poundland said: "Whilst we can't yet be definitive, we have plenty of places much smaller than Stockport where we operate a number of stores.

"What matters to us is having the right store in the right location with the right ranges for customers.

"We're very excited about the possibility of growing in Stockport, through the Merseyway scheme and the Wilko announcement."

As it stands, Poundland is currently in discussions with landlords to agree terms over leases for stores across the country, including Stockport. These discussions are expected to be completed by early autumn.

More updates are expected on redundant Wilko staff, given Poundland's ostensible commitment to hire as many former staff as possible for its new store[s].
