Police in Stockport will receive a funding boost in 2024/25 as part of a national increase in police spending.

The UK Government has increased spending on police forces in England and Wales by £843 million for the 24/25 financial year. This will bring the total spend to £18.4 billion, split across 43 police forces nationally.

For Greater Manchester Police (GMP) - the force which covers Stockport - the 2024/25 boost will increase total funding from the national government to £524.7 million. This does not include the amount contributed to the police through your council tax bill (known as the policing precept).

Paul Athans, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Hazel Grove, said: "This additional funding for our police is excellent news, and alongside the 1,280 new police officers in Greater Manchester, will make our streets safer and help cut crime.

"The Conservatives are taking a tough stance on all crime and delivering the long-term decisions needed for a brighter future."

Police Federation Chair Steve Hartshorn was more critical of the grant, saying: "It is disappointing to see police and crime commissioners yet again having to choose to take more money from local residents who have already paid for policing in taxes at a time when the cost of living is still biting hard on many, especially the recent energy cost increases."

Nonetheless, other police representatives were more positive. Roger Hirst, Police and Crime Commissioner for Essex, said: "Today's announcement is good news for policing and gives Police and Crime Commissioners greater flexibility in locally raised funding. The police service must adapt to meet evolving threats and challenges, and this can only happen with sound investment to support growth."
