Police have recovered a handgun and nine rounds of ammunition in an area of Reddish Vale, near Brinnington.

The gun was found on 1 April during a police patrol of the area.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have been out in force in Brinnington and the surrounding areas as part of Operation Vulcan, a project designed to crack down on crime in the area.

GMP has seized the weapon, ready for further analysis.

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Kennedy, from GMP's Operation Vulcan team, described the find as "a significant recovery"

"It means there is one less deadly weapon on the streets, and which could have easily been used to cause significant harm or worse.

"These sort of weapons have no place on the streets of Stockport, or indeed anywhere in Greater Manchester, and I am glad it was recovered as part of Vulcan's proactive work.

The specialist Operation Vulcan police team has been on the ground since mid-February.

They have previous experience working in Derker, Piccadilly Gardens, and Cheetham Hill.

They have been carrying out "a sustained campaign of activity", ranging from arrests and early-morning search warrants through to community engagement days.

The team aims to tackle criminality head-on, while 'laying foundations' to keep the crime rate lower in the future.

DCI Kennedy added: "Brinnington's residents deserve to live in their community without fear of those who don't care for others around them, and as we near two months in the area, we continue to work robustly as part of a dedicated partnership approach.

"If anyone has any information that they'd like to share with us in relation to criminality in the Brinnington area, please do get in touch with us – either directly or anonymously."
