The lift to platforms one and two at Stockport station will be closed for two weeks in May.

The lift is undergoing essential maintenance works, meaning it will be out of action from Tuesday 6 May until Tuesday 20 May.

Passengers who need step-free access to trains travelling southbound at Stockport are therefore advised to plan their journeys in advance - Network Rail recommends these passengers start at Manchester Piccadilly if they're travelling to the likes of London, Stoke, Crewe and Macclesfield.

The maintenance works involve replacing the lift doors and some of the equipment within the shaft itself.

The lift is around 20 years old - works are designed to make it more reliable for the next few years.

Phil James, Network Rail's North West route director, said: "I am very sorry to our passengers who will be disrupted by this essential lift maintenance.

"Making sure our lifts are in good working order is critical to creating inclusive railway where everyone can travel with ease.

"If you need step-free access to travel between 6-20 May, I'd advise you to start your journey at Manchester Piccadilly, or allow more time to travel as part of your journey will be by an accessible taxi."

Lisa Magee, Avanti West Coast station manager at Stockport, said: "We're working with Network Rail and industry partners to help customers as the works to maintain the lifts at Stockport station take place.

"As always, our teams will be on hand to help customers travelling to and from Stockport during this time but we strongly recommend customers plan ahead, check before they travel and leave extra time for their journey.

"We would like to thank customers for their patience while Network Rail undertake this essential work."
