A derelict bakery is being transformed into a tapas bar after plans were given the go-ahead by Stockport Council.

"Dos Hermanos" will take over a historic building on Mellor Road, Cheadle Hulme, and will include a mezzanine, bar, and a two-bedroom flat upstairs.

Located just two minutes away from Cheadle Hulme railway station, planners say it's the best use of the empty space.

The plans follow a string of redevelopment projects in Stockport, including new housing across Reddish and Hazel Grove, as well as new plans to revitalise a derelict shop on the Stockport Underbanks

Originally built in 1900, the property is considered a locally-listed building, meaning special considerations have been given to maintain its historic significance. This includes making limited changes to the structure itself, and using matching materials to the rest of the area in the redevelopment.

The site was last home to the Butterworth's Bakery, which closed its doors in 2017 after 37 years of service.

A year later, Stockport Council shelved plans to see the building demolished to make way for new homes in the area, after the developer went bust midway through the project. The property was then sold to Stockport-based developer Porter and Daughter via auction in 2023.

The development does not include off-street car parking, which is hoped will encourage more use of public transport to get to the venue.

"The works have been carefully designed to ensure the integrity and character of the building is retained whilst allowing for its realistic and viable reuse," planning documents state.

"It offers the opportunity to reuse and retain the most historically significant elements of the site. It should be acknowledged that without the proposed development, the reuse and renovation of the original building would be unlikely to happen."

Work is expected to begin in the coming months.
