Permanent school streets proposed outside three Stockport schools

A permanent 'school street' has been proposed for three Stockport schools. A school street would restrict traffic around pick-up and drop-off times, to encourage more to cycle or walk to school.
The proposal would mean Cheadle Primary School, St Matthew's Church of England Primary (Edgeley), and St Mary's Church of England Primary (Reddish) would have a permanent school street on their respective main roads.
Thus far, seven schools across the borough - including the aforementioned three - took part in a trial for school streets, funded by Transport for Greater Manchester. This proposal, then, would see the school street idea 'set in stone' for the three schools in question.
The proposal seeks approval from Cllr Grace Baynham, the Cabinet Member for Parks, Highways & Transport Services.
As the proposal summarises: "All three schools considered the benefits to be sufficient to wish to continue their schools after the expiration of the original experimental Traffic Regulation Order and make the arrangements permanent."
The stated aim of school streets is to support active travel and promote cleaner air, encouraging parents to "leave the car at home and either walk, cycle, or scoot to school". Only permit holders and other essential groups such as carers and emergency services would retain access.
Those who do not fall into this category but who still wish to drive are encouraged to park away from the school street, and to be considerate and legal in how and where they choose to park.
