Local politicians have spoken out against the closure of the Golden Hind pub in Offerton.
The local favourite closed permanently on 23 November, after 56 years in business.
Rumours of closure began circulating in October, prompting a passionate response from residents and local politicians.
Despite a campaign to save the pub and register it as a community asset, Greene King, which owns the pub, has closed the branch.
Greene King said in a statement that 'multiple factors' had been considered, although specific reasons for the closure remain unclear. As yet, no planning application has been submitted for the site and its future is uncertain.
"Making the decision to close a pub is never an easy one", the pub chain said. "We are aware that this will be disappointing news to the local community and our loyal customers, and would like to thank those who have enjoyed visiting us over the years.
"We look forward to welcoming them into our other pubs in the area soon."
The politicians' response
Local councillors have reached out to Greene King for further information, but have criticised the chain for having 'no interest' in communication.
Offerton councillor Helen Hibbert said: "The lack of information and consideration for local residents is staggering, especially when this pub has been there for over 50 years and has been a part of the community for so long."
Similarly, Paul Athans, Conservative MP candidate for Hazel Grove, said: "I was shocked by the sudden closure of the pub.
"I am writing to the chief executive of Greene King to ask why it has closed, what are the plans for the site, and why has community engagement been the way it has."
Greene King has stated that it is working to find employment opportunities at other nearby pubs for displaced staff.
