Passengers thanked for 'patience' after 21-day railway closure ends

Passengers have been thanked for their patience after a major piece of engineering put the local rail network out of action for 21 days.
From 2-22 August, around 100 engineers worked around the clock to complete a key phase of the Greek Street bridge replacement.
It meant that no trains could run through Stockport station for 21 days.
However, despite the inconvenience for passengers, the closures provided workers with the 'perfect' opportunity not only to replace the 67-year-old Greek Street bridge, but also to carry out numerous railway improvement schemes in the area.
The lines re-opened on-time and as planned on Saturday 23 August, in time for the Bank Holiday weekend.

John Nixon, a senior manager at Network Rail, said: "We'd like to thank passengers impacted by this significant railway closure of the West Coast Main Line for the last three weeks.
"It's allowed us to invest tens of millions of pounds and make wide ranging improvements to provide a safer and more reliable railway, benefiting journeys for passengers and freight in the future."
While the lines were closed, engineers from Murphy removed the old bridge and replaced it with a new one, expected to last for the next 120 years.
This 21-day period has been described as "the main phase" of the £20m to overhaul Greek Street bridge in Stockport.
However, although the railway lines are now re-open, there's still lots more work to do above ground. It means that the Armoury Roundabout will remain closed until March 2026.
