A local counsellor is aiming to walk one million steps by the end of this year, in an effort to raise money for struggling dads across Stockport.
Neil Gaw, founder of Somebody's Dad - a community interest company supporting fathers living without their children - aims to raise £1,000 to help local fathers.
Somebody's Dad is aimed at any man with an SK postcode who feels he is struggling with a life without children. This can range from those who have lost their children through bereavement, or the breakdown of a relationship.
"There can be a lot of mental health issues for men who can't see their children", Neil said.
"It's just about being there for them through that period, and easing their pain. It's one of the worst things that can happen for men.
Speaking of this most recent fundraising initiative, Neil said: "Receiving counselling and addressing mental health issues still has a big stigma attached for many, especially men.
"Part of this service will be looking at ways to encourage men to seek help. Already, we plan on offering walking/outdoor therapy as this seems to be a more acceptable way from men to come to counselling.
"This is one of the reasons why walking a million steps seems to be an obvious choice for fundraising."
