Old Town General Store in Stockport town centre closes
The Old Town General Store in Stockport town centre has closed its doors.
The independent store, which specialised in clothing and accessories, cited the impact of Covid and the cost of living crisis as contributing towards the closure.
Having opened in 2020, the store was named was named one of The Guardian's top 20 independent boutiques in Britain in 2023. But sadly, its premises at 51 Great Underbank is now vacant.
The closure was announced 'with great sadness' in a social media statement.
"Since we opened, we have battled against Covid restrictions and a cost of living crisis", the statement said. "Being truly independent and self-funded, we just couldn't go on any longer.
"We will be in touch with customers and suppliers in the coming days as we process the closure of the business. It has all been quite sudden.
"I would like to thank everyone that has shown us some support since opening in October 2020.
"This is not how we wanted the story to end."
