Two eight-storey apartment blocks are set to be built in Stockport creating nearly 150 affordable homes.

It's part of a new residential development at the corner of Chestergate and King Street West in Stockport.

The application from Great Places Housing Group was approved by Stockport council's planning committee last week.

It will see the construction of 59 one-bedroom and 89 two-bedroom apartments on the land.

All of the new homes will be designated as "affordable", made up both rent to buy and affordable rent properties.

Qualifying tenants in the rental homes will be offered a 20 percent discount on market rent prices to live in the building.

The site is based at the junction of Kings Street West and Chestergate (Image - Google Maps)

The site is described in planning reports as a "very accessible and sustainable location", and is within close distance to the town centre and transport connections, such as the new Stockport interchange.

Work to transform derelict and abandoned sites around Stockport town centre has been ongoing for years, with the aim of creating new communities within the borough and using town centre land over building on the green belt.

The council is aiming to create thousands of new homes in the town centre over the next few years, many of which are set to be apartments.

It's also investing in improved business facilities, such as the ongoing Stockport Exchange development which is creating new offices as well as space for bars, shops, and restaurants near the town's train station.

With growing numbers of people looking to move to Stockport, the borough is facing a shortage of housing, and there are thousands of people on the housing register, some of whom have been waiting years for a home.
