Tesco has confirmed that it is in the planning process for a new Express store in Mersey Square.

The supermarket chain has submitted a premises licence application for 16-22 Mersey Square, in Stockport town centre.

A planning application may follow soon, but as yet no details of timescale have been revealed. Tesco has said it will keep the local community updated with the plans.

The premises licence includes the provision of refreshments and alcohol. The final date for representations on this application is 22 March.

At current, the closest Tesco in Stockport town centre is the site at Portwood Roundabout.

Tesco describes its Express stores as a place for 'essentials', for those who can't get all their shopping done in one go.

According to data company Scrapeshark, there are currently 2,876 Tesco stores in the UK.
