When the first buses rolled out of Stockport interchange last month, it marked a landmark moment for the town which is undergoing huge change.

The £140 million project is at the heart of Stockport's regeneration plans, and has led to the opening of Viaduct Park and the creation of 200 new apartments.

But work hasn't stopped there, as there are more improvements taking place this month for residents to look forward to.

Towards the end of April, a new spiral cycle and walking ramp is due to open, linking the town to the Trans Pennine Trail and a public area along the River Mersey.

It's hoped the new ramp will encourage more active forms of travel around the town, creating new routes for walkers and cyclists and reducing traffic.

The new ramp will complement the cycle and pedestrian walkway already in place which links to the town's railway station.

The interchange is also welcoming a new coffee shop occupied by a "well known" coffeehouse, and a convenience store.

Chris Barnes, infrastructure pipeline programme director at Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "Later this spring, the new walking, wheeling, and cycling spiral ramp at Stockport Interchange will open, connecting Viaduct Park with the Mersey River frontage and Trans Pennine Trail. This will open up a riverside area to the public for the first time, while also giving people easy access between the park and on to the town centre.

"We are also now looking forward to opening a coffee shop and convenience store in the Interchange in the next few weeks. A well known coffeehouse has chosen Stockport Interchange as its first unit outside a city centre to operate its 'grab and go' concept, while the convenience store will be operated by an established retailer which TfGM has been working with for 15 years."
