The new Poundland store in Stockport town centre will open on Saturday 3 August at 9am.

The new shop is based on the site of the former BHS store. It features 9,000 sq ft of floor space, and will stock 'the most up-to-date' Poundland ranges.

This includes chilled and frozen food, a full range of Pepco clothing, plus new Pepco homeware products - all this in addition to the usual general merchandise ranges.

A Poundland spokesperson said the discount chain was 'delighted' with the move, and hoped it would 'breathe new life' into the BHS site.

"We promised a store the town could be proud of and we've worked hard to deliver it," said Poundland retail director Alan Smallman.

"We're thrilled to be moving into our new Stockport home.  We know how hard the local council is working to bring new opportunities and vibrancy to the centre of Stockport and we're pleased to be able to play a small part with our new location."

Cllr Colin MacAlister, cabinet member for economy and regeneration at Stockport Council, said:  "With the decline of many of our much-loved department stores over the years, town centres across the country are facing the issue of having large vacant units on their hands.

"The opening of Poundland's new flagship store in our town centre demonstrates a renewed confidence in Stockport and I wish them every success.

"With improved public realm at Merseyway, a new Innovation Centre, as well as a new transport interchange and Stockroom, an exciting new space for creativity, discovery and inspiration, due to open soon, the town centre is thriving."

Victoria Nichol, centre manager at Merseyway said: "We're excited to welcome Poundland to their new home amongst our vibrant community of retailers.

"This brand new flagship store brings a brilliant range of products and fantastic value to our shoppers, enhancing the diverse retail experience Merseyway is known for.

"We look forward to seeing the positive impact Poundland will have on our centre."

The adjoining JD store is expected to open nearer the end of the year.

Poundland's existing town centre branch on Warren Street will close in light of the new opening. Likewise, when JD opens later in the year, it will also close its two town centre stores.

Retail property company Barker Proudlove helped facilitate the move.

Tom Prescott, the company's director, said: "Whilst numerous commentators are keen to push local tenants as the solution for town centre retailing, the reality is successful towns need a blend of both local and national brands to ensure the ongoing vibrancy and success of their retail provision.

"The retail market is all about being adaptable, and businesses like JD Sports have done this tremendously well recently, continually evolving to suit ever-changing consumer demands.

"Similarly, value-driven brands such as Poundland are in consistent demand from shoppers, enabling them to generate weeklong footfall for occupiers trading around them."
