Stepping Hill Hospital now has some new parking measures aimed at improving 'accessibility and safety'.

Included in the measures is parking enforcement and separate barriered areas for staff.

In terms of enforcement, UK car park management officers will be patrolling the site to ensure that vehicles are correctly parked - i.e, whether they are in marked bays and if they are displaying the correct ticket or permit.

And as for barriered staff car parks, they will only be accessible by permit holders using a staff ID badge.

Furthermore, there will be new criteria-based parking rules for staff, whereby staff will be given permits based on factors such as how close they live to the site.

The parking charge notice rate is £70, which will be reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days. This is in line with other Greater Manchester NHS organisations.

In coming up with these new measures, Stockport NHS Trust has spoken with visitors, patients, and members of staff.

A trust spokesperson said: "These enforcement measures will help to address any issues from those not paying for parking, or parking poorly, to ensure that visitors and staff park appropriately and safely across the site."

Gareth Hughes, the trust's director of estates and facilities, said: "We know that car parking can be an emotive issue for staff, patients and our local community, but we also recognise the difficulties people have when navigating and parking at our hospital.

"The changes we are making have safety at the heart of them, so that we can provide a better experience for those attending our site.

"With 5,900 people working on site, and large numbers of patients and carers visiting us every day, we need to ensure our site is safe and parking remains a sustainable option. We hope these new measures will help us with this aim."

It's lack of spaces, that's the problem! Especially disabled spaces. Able bodied people might be able to use buses or walk from somewhere but l wouldn't be able to. It's very distressing already. And with builders & contractors always on site a number of spaces are used by them. Charging fines doesn't solve the problem of shortage of spaces.

I am more than happy to pay a reasonable parking if you can find a space. There in lies the problem. Unless your appointment is early morning you have virtually no chance of getting a space. Its a nightmare and always has been. For the size of the hospital the parking is hugely inadequate.

I recently had to go to Wrightington Hospital in Wigan for treatment. I live in Stockport and can drive to Wrightington, park up and be in the waiting room quicker than driving to Stepping Hill, driving around for ages looking for a space.

They need to build a proper multistorey car park on the site. The prefab metal ones aren't good enough.

That’s if you can find a parking space !

What happens if you pay to park and you end up going over the time through no fault of your own? My appointment was at 2.30pm so I got there just after 2pm ( so as not to be late
I didn't get called till 3.30pm and didn't come out until after 4.30pm
It's worrying when you don't want to be late for your appointment but you are then called in late.

I don't object to paying if the charge is reasonable. When going shopping the fees are much lower which I don't have a problem with. Why is the charge so much higher especially if someone is there in an emergency.
