A new Lidl with an in-store bakery could soon open in Stockport, north of the town centre.

Plans for a new Lidl discount foodstore have been proposed as part of a scheme on 111 Wellington Road North in Heaton Norris, which could have up to 98 parking spaces around the site.

The store will include a sales area, warehouse delivery area, chiller room, bakery, manager's office, staff welfare facilities, and customer toilets.

Opening hours are proposed between 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am to 4pm on Sundays and bank holidays.

It's thought that a maximum of 60 cars would be parked at the shop on a weekday, rising to around 77 on a Saturday, with higher numbers expected around Christmas and Easter.

There are two access points already established at the site from Sparthfield Road, which can be used to join Wellington Road North, but these would be replaced under the plans, with a new priority junction off Sparthfield Road located further away from the A6.

Pedestrians will be able to access the Lidl from a dedicated route on Wellington Road North.

A transport assessment submitted as part of the application states that most customers and staff will 'live within the local area and walk, cycle, and potentially use public transport' to get to and from the shop.

During a public consultation, 258 people supported the opening of a new Lidl, with 36 against it and 31 undecided.

Some shared concerns about an increase in traffic on the A6, but others welcomed the plans.

The proposed site was previously used as a car showroom, but it's now being used by Ford to store vehicles, according to a planning report.

If approved, the total area of the new store would be more than 2,000 square metres in size.

The deadline for the application to be decided by Stockport council is July 26, 2024.
