New Joy Division artwork is being planned in Stockport in tribute to one of Greater Manchester's most iconic music groups.

The proposed installation is based on the cover of Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures album cover and could be created on the front of a building in Stockport's historic Underbanks if a planning application is successful.

The town has close connections with the band, which used Strawberry Studios to record their work.

Joy Division is undoubtedly one of Greater Manchester's best exports, gaining icon status around the world for their unique style of post-punk industrial music.

A mural to Ian Curtis on Port Street in Manchester city centre sparked controversy last year when it was replaced with an album cover for the rapper Aitch.

It was later restored on the side of Manchester's Star and Garter pub.

A number of projects are taking place at Stockport's Underbanks as it goes through a transformation to redevelop some of its empty sites and attract more people to visit.

It led to the council revealing in September that it had secured funding for four new street art sites in the town centre.

Part of the work has involved using street art to draw the crowds, supported alongside funding from the National Lottery to refurbish some of the buildings which had fallen into disrepair.

According to the planning application for the Joy Division painting, permission for the artwork from the owner of the building has already been received.

However, it still needs final approval by Thursday, December 14 before any work can begin.
