New information boards proposed to 'honour' Cheadle's history
By Alasdair Perry 1st Mar 2026
Plans have been submitted for six new information panels around Cheadle telling the story of the village's past and its landmarks.
The boards would complement and expand upon the existing Cheadle Heritage Trail, covering a range of topics and sites; from St Mary's Church to Agatha Christie.
The proposed locations are:
- St Mary's Church
- Cheadle Primary School
- Abney Hall (one for Agatha Christie and another for the hall itself)
- Brooklyn Crescent Park
- Jonathan Alcock & Sons Independent Funeral Directors
The new panels would aim to give visitors and locals a guided tour of some of the key landmarks in the area.
The plans have been submitted by Cheadle Civic Society.
The boards would be carefully sited at each location so as to avoid compromising the character of the respective sites.
They're being introduced "to better reveal and to celebrate Cheadle's rich history", the planning statement reads.
It's also hoped that they will prove a valuable educational resource for students and learners.
"The proposals aim (...) to honour and enhance the village's rich history, cultural heritage and natural character", the statement continues.
"The Trail will link key heritage landmarks, greenspaces and community hubs across Cheadle.
"The proposals have been designed to sensitively respond to the heritage setting and assets that the interpretation boards will be celebrating."
A decision on the plans is due on 1 April 2026.
