The new Greek Street bridge between Stockport town centre and Edgeley will help support a new Metrolink service to the area.

The area has been closed since 31 March 2025. Engineers from Network Rail have been replacing the roundabout bridge in its entirety after the old structure reached the end of its natural life.

Once it is complete, the new structure will facilitate the use of tram-trains and will therefore 'future-proof' Stockport for the arrival of Metrolink, which has been confirmed for the future.

The bridge will be opening on 27 March, and promises to support the 'wider transformation' of Stockport, by connecting new developments including Weir Mill, Stockport 8, and Stockport Interchange.

Some of the changes at the roundabout include:

• New zebra crossings on the eastern and northern sides of the junction.
• Improvements to the existing zebra crossing on the southern side of the roundabout.
• Improvements to the pedestrian crossing on the western side.

Nearby, there is also a new walking and cycling route connecting the newly-renamed 'Driver John Axon' railway bridge with Thomson Street.

Cllr Mark Roberts, leader of Stockport Council, said: "The reopening of Greek Street Bridge marks a really important moment for Stockport.

"Not only will it restore a key route for residents, commuters and businesses, but it also strengthens the foundations we're putting in place for the borough's future.

"Reopening the road is another step forward in our wider transport vision for Stockport. It supports our long term‑ ambitions for Metrolink and the improved connectivity it will bring.

"We're committed to building a transport network that works for everyone, and this milestone brings us closer to achieving that."

Cllr Grace Baynham, cabinet member for parks, highways and transport services at Stockport Council, also said: "We have used the opportunity presented by the closure to renew and improve the infrastructure on and around the bridge, as well as working with Network Rail to future proof the structure for potential tram train options in the years ahead.

"This has been a major project, and I want to sincerely thank residents and local businesses for their patience and understanding while the essential work has taken place.
