Man honoured for 'exceptional bravery' after he detained man who had crashed into elderly woman in Marple

A man has been awarded a prestigious accolade from Greater Manchester Police for his role in detaining a suspected criminal in Marple.
Mr Michael McPhee was deemed by police to have shown 'exceptional bravery' when he detained a man who had seemingly crashed into an elderly woman on his bicycle and was intending to leave the scene.
Mr McPhee was presented with the Chief Constable's Citizens' Award by GMP's Chief Constable, Sir Stephen Watson QPM.
The incident took place in September 2025 in Marple.
Mr McPhee had initially heard a scream and a loud crash - rushing to the scene he saw an elderly woman lying injured on the ground, while a man nearby attempted to recover his bicycle.
Several bystanders started to help the victim, so Michael saw his chance to detain the suspect. He kept him on the scene for around five minutes until police arrived.
"I just did what anyone would have done and stepped in to stop him getting away before the police got there", Michael explained.
"It's really nice to be recognised though and I'm grateful to have been invited here tonight with my family to receive this award."
Superintendent Dave Henthorne described the severity of the incident as 'shocking'.
"Thankfully the victim survived, despite being thrown a significant distance along the road because of the perpetrator's actions", Supt Henthorne said.
"Mr McPhee detained the suspect and held onto him until police arrived and arrested him, demonstrating great bravery and public spirit."
