More planting and 'enhanced greenery' proposed for Stockport town centre
By Alasdair Perry 26th Apr 2026
Stockport town centre could be getting a bit more green in the near future.
Totally Stockport, the town centre's business improvement district, has unveiled plans for a 'greener, healthier and more vibrant' town centre.
They are proposing more planting to 'join the green dots' throughout the centre, in a new scheme called 'Going Green'.
A sketch shows proposals for new trees, planters and greenery around Weir Mill, the Merseyway Centre, Princes Street, Chestergate, St Peter's Square, and the Underbanks.
This new planting will, in a sense, form green corridors connecting with the other parks and green spaces around Stockport - such as Viaduct Park, Reddish Vale, and Crookiley Wood.
The aim is to encourage more people to walk and browse around the town centre by making it more attractive and welcoming for pedestrians.
The scheme is being delivered alongside Layer.studio, a landscape architecture firm.
Paul Kelsall, board director at Totally Stockport, said the changes will help the town centre "shift gear from concrete-first to climate-first, from grey spaces to green places".
"From Merseyway to the Underbanks and Chestergate, the masterplan shows how simple, well-placed changes such as more planting and enhanced greenery can change the face of the town centre," he said.
"This is not a distant vision. It is designed to move fast. The plan combines quick, visible wins with bigger long-term change. It starts now, builds momentum and sets a clear direction for future investment.
"Whilst aesthetics are important, it's not just about how things look.
"Greening helps cool streets, clean the air, support wildlife and improve everyday wellbeing; so it's a win-win. It also strengthens the town centre economy by bringing more people in, encouraging them to stay longer and backing local businesses."
Shaun Freeman-Jones, BID Manager at Totally Stockport, added: "we are constantly talking to businesses and visitors about their town centre experience, and the recurring theme of greening always filters through. We believe this plan will help us build on the amazing work that has already been completed by Stockport Council in recent years"
Danny Crump, director of urbanism at Layer.studio, added: "Stockport already has plenty of new green assets, but there is always room for more.
"The aim is to connect these into a coherent network, using greening as a tool for improving walkability, boosting footfall, supporting biodiversity and enhancing health & wellbeing"
