Merseyway Shopping Centre has reported a 'surge' in footfall over the weekend (27-28 July).

It comes after a spell of beautiful weather and busy events; the mini Olympic Park opened on Saturday, and Krazy Races took place on Sunday.

Both events brought thousands of additional visitors to the town centre.

On Saturday alone, the centre reported an 11.3 percent increase in footfall compared with the Saturday prior.

The recently-opened mini Olympic park features obstacles, games, and a podium for budding local athletes.

Saturday also saw the return of 'Merseybay', the outdoor beach which aims to bring a little piece of the seaside to Stockport.

Further still, there are a range of fairground rides now open at the centre.

The festivities will continue throughout the summer holidays, with weekly sports events taking place at Merseyway every Wednesday (7-28 August), and at Viaduct Park every Thursday (8-29 August). Find more information HERE

Victoria Nichol, Merseyway centre manager, said she was 'thrilled' at the upsurge in footfall.

"The positive response from the community has been overwhelming", she said.

Victoria added: "I'd like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to grab a Sporty Stockport Passport, which are available to collect at locations across Merseyway.

"Children can keep a diary of all the sports-related activities they've taken part in this summer to see just how active they've been, and a competition via Merseyway's social channels will offer those taking part the chance to win a variety of sports-themed prizes!"

Councillor Frankie Singleton, cabinet member for communities, culture and sport, said: "It's an incredibly exciting time for Stockport's town centre and the work in Merseyway is just part of our multi-million investment to ensure our town is a great place to live, work, shop and play.

"These works will help to support the wider regeneration of the town centre and complement the programme of activities planned for the summer."
