Local woman to walk the Himlayas to raise money for Stockport Charity
Jeanie Davies, a Bollington educational consultant, wants to fundraise for a local women's refuge by walking the Himalayas.
She'll do this by scaling the Indian part of the mountain range, all whilst carrying 15kg on her back.
The self-employed author is training by hiking White Nancy - a Bollington landmark - every week, ready for her big challenge in November.
The mum-of-two wants to raise £3000 for Stockport Women's Centre (SWC), where women facing issues such as domestic abuse can seek support.
The SWC site states: "The Women's Centre will support, empower and educate to improve the wellbeing and physical and mental health of women."
And despite the epic hike being months away, she's already raised an incredible £700.
Jeanie told our sister newspaper Macclesfield Nub News about why she is doing this challenging fundraiser.
"I wanted to support a women's charity as we are in a time where centres and refuges are being cut", said Jeanie.
"I'll be going to the Himalayas on my own but doing the hike as a guided tour with other people doing it for various charities.
"This path is not very well walked, so it will be great to walk up a route that isn't often touched. It will be a full trek of six days.
"As well as the walk through the Himalayas, I recently held a fundraising kitchen disco, and will be raising money through other events like teaching yoga at Blossom Festival at Wilmslow's Quarrybank Mill.
"I also teach yoga in my garden, which will also raise money for Stockport Women's Centre. I find yoga is better outside as you really feel connected with nature.
"I've never done anything like this before. I trekked in Madagascar years ago but it was not for charity.
"To have raised so much already it feels amazing and speaks volumes to the generosity of the people involved.
"Thank you to family, friends and the people of Macclesfield for your donations so far. I'm always bowled over by the kindness of people where we live."
A spokeswoman for SWC said: "We very much rely on the support of our local community and when we heard that Jeanie wanted to take on a challenge on our behalf we were delighted."
"To find out that the challenge was a breath-taking Himalayan trek, it took our breath away. For Jeanie, this will be a once in a lifetime experience but for the women we support, her fundraising efforts could be life changing.
"Our services make a difference to more than a thousand women every year. Women who desperately need our support but were only able to do so thanks to the generosity of people like Jeanie and her amazing supporters. We can't thank Jeanie enough and hope she enjoys every moment of her challenge."
