Improvements proposed for busy junction near Stepping Hill Hospital

Stockport Council is proposing works to Dialstone Lane and the junction it shares with the A6 (Buxton Road) near Stepping Hill Hospital.
Works would involve an amendment to the Dialstone Lane arm of the A6/Poplar Grove junction to provide an extended left turn lane and introduce a separate right turn lane.
There would also be upgrades to bus stops including improved pedestrian access, improved road-crossing points, and new parking restrictions to reduce congestion caused by parked vehicles.
The council said on its consultation website: "These changes will make the junction operate more efficiently for traffic, improve pedestrian access to bus stops and also formalise and protect parking for residents who don't have driveways to park on.
"[...] This should increase capacity and reduce the likelihood of right turning queuing traffic blocking traffic going straight ahead to the Hospital. To achieve this the existing footway will be converted to carriageway and part of the existing verge to footway."
The changes represent an attempt to 'support sustainable travel choices', whilst maintaining safety and the smooth operation of the existing transport network.
This proposed scheme would be paid for by Greater Manchester's City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement and Transforming Cities Funding. These are national investment funds to improve local transport networks, access for local businesses and organisations, and to help residents access amenities in their communities.
Residents are invited to comment on these proposals when they open up to public consultation tomorrow (13 July).
Stockport Council adds: "We would like to hear your views on the proposals, and specifically to what extent you agree or disagree with them.
"All responses to this consultation will be considered as part of the scheme development process prior to any implementation."
The deadline for responses is 9 August.
