2026 is shaping up to be an exciting year for Stockport.
Here are some of the new buildings and developments to keep your eye on throughout the near future.
Weir Mill

This new development will transform the west of the town centre.
A repurposing of the historic mill building of the same name overlooking the Mersey, Weir Mill will comprise 253 new homes, new cafes and restaurants, and even a new public space.
It will see two new apartment blocks built alongside the historic site, as well as commercial space on the ground floor.
Weir Mill's history stretches back to the 1700s when it was built as a cotton works as the industrial revolution exploded across Greater Manchester.
The restoration of the mill was due to finish this year, but bosses at Capital&Centric who are leading the project say the complexity of the work has pushed the timeline back.
The project is now expected to be complete by Spring 2026.
New shops in Merseyway shopping centre

Shortly after announcing one of their busiest years on record, Merseyway said there will be more new retailers coming to the shopping centre in 2026.
Although official names and dates have yet to be confirmed, more details are expected early next year.
A spokesperson described it as a return of confidence for the local high street.
The centre has seen a 40 percent increase in footfall year on year, and hosted a string of exciting new openings and events.
Chief among these was Stockroom, the new library and events space which has already loaned 30,000 books and presided over an 80 percent increase in local library membership.
Six new stores have already opened in Merseyway in 2025: Danish retail chain Sostrene Grene; national retailer Cards Direct; wholefood store The Grape Tree; tailoring business The Zip Yard; independent florist, Sweet Bud; and CiC Plastic Shed.
Stopford Park

A new housing development will open in 2026 in Stockport town centre, which will feature 442 new homes.
Known as Stopford Park, the development is based on Greek Street and Wellington Road South. The first phase of construction is on a block of 62 one- and two-bedroom homes, expected to open around March 2026.
Ensuing phases will see the conversion of the former Metropolitan Girls' School into 122 new apartments, as well as a further 258 homes in a new 16-storey building.
The development, which is being carried out by Cityheart, promises to 'transform' the area and mark a 'new chapter' for Stockport.
Marple Leisure Hub

Work is now underway on a new leisure hub in Marple containing a gym, swimming pool, library, cafe, and more.
Ground was officially broken on the £20m project on Friday 26 April.
The modern facility is due to open in 2026, and will serve as a replacement for Marple baths and Marple library, whilst offering a range of new features.
It will have a five-lane swimming pool, a ground floor library with a small cafe, a 60-station fitness suite, shared community spaces, and a relocated Marple clinic.
The main contractor is Willmott Dixon, and they have also provided opportunities for local apprentices to help out.
The project itself has been partly funded by a government Levelling Up grant.
New Stockport fire station

A new fire station is opening in Autumn 2026.
Based on King Street West, on the site of the former Stockport fire station, it's part of a £51m investment to open three new sites around Greater Manchester.
Demolition at the former Stockport fire station started in August, since then firefighters have been working from neighbouring Whitehill Community Fire Station.
The new station in Stockport will get a new name, being known going forward as 'Stockport Central Community Fire Station'.
There is expected to be no reduction in the levels of service once the new station opens.
