Fire crews were called to a blaze in an apartment block in the Lancashire Hill estate last night (Wednesday 7 January).

Four fire engines rushed to the scene around 7.30pm, as smoke billowed from one of the upper storeys.

The fire started in the building's bin chute, after it had become blocked and caught fire.

After around 90 minutes, crews extinguished the blaze.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said, "At around 7:30pm on Wednesday, 7th January, firefighters were called to reports of a fire at Lancashire Hill in Stockport.

"Four fire engines from Offerton, Whitehill, Stockport and Wythenshawe fire stations quickly arrived at the scene, where a bin chute within the building had become blocked and caught fire.

"Firefighters applied water to the bin chute across several levels of the building to extinguish the fire and remove the blockages.

"Crews were at the scene for around 90 minutes."
